Dorothy D. Charf January 11, 1925 – March 7, 2010
Dorothy Dean Charf died peacefully March 7th, 2010.
During her 85 years she had a remarkably full life, journeying from her small town roots of Brunswick, Royal and Boone County, Nebraska southern California for one year and finally to Kent, WA. The fourth daughter of Russell and Hattie (Rabbass) Burch, Dorothy was born January 11, 1925 Brunswick, Nebraska. She attended grade school in Royal, Nebraska while growing up on several farms in the area with her four sisters and two brothers.
Dorothy married DeWayne L. Charf on August 29th, 1942 in a ceremony at the Holt County Court House in O'Neill, Nebraska. They celebrated 47-1/2 years of marriage through April of 1990. Two children were born to their union: LeRoy (LD) Charf of Vashon Island WA and Linda Klopfer of Kent, WA.
The couple initially lived and farmed one half mile North of Royal, NE, post WWII, and prior to moving to Kent, WA in the fall of 1948. Dorothy engaged in a wide variety of employment positions ranging from industrial, commercial, canning, farming supervisor, domestic endeavors and retail clerk.
Dorothy and DeWayne traveled annually for 40 years, to Nebraska for their two week vacations and family reunions. During retirement they enjoyed many years of leisure traveling in the southwest and their favorite Arizona. Camping, crafts, clam digging, annual trips to Reno, NV were always looked forward to. Mariner's baseball played an important part of Dorothy's leisure time.
Dorothy loved living at the Lake Meridian home, east of Kent that she and DeWayne built shortly after arriving in Kent in 1948. She resided there for over 60 years. She particularly enjoyed spending quality time with her six grandchildren, one great grand child and numerous friends.
Dorothy was a loving, kind and generous presence in the lives of her children and grandchildren, ready to offer support and patience, to accept each of us as individuals and to listen and love. We offer our appreciation to all her friends - - those relationships meant so much to her.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her cherished husband of 47-1/2 years, DeWayne LeRoy Charf, parents Russell & Hattie Burch, brothers Leland and Norman Burch and twin sisters Leona Frahm & Iona Anson.
Dorothy is survived by one sister, Luella Fryer Salber of Neligh, NE., sister-in-law Wilma Burch of Concord, Calif., 24 nieces, nephews and their spouses, along with many, many other offspring and friends.
Survivors include her two children and their spouses: LD (LeRoy) & Reeney O'Reilley Charf of Vashon Island, WA, and Linda (Charf) & Bruce Klopfer of Kent, WA. Six grandchildren: Chad Charf of Seattle, WA, Tara Charf of Seattle, WA, Dana (Schuyler) Charf of Seattle, WA, Jason Ackerlund, of Seattle, WA, Josh Klopfer of Ellensburg, WA and Jill (Klopfer) & Budd Jardine of Kent WA.; two step-grand-children: Mystic R. O'Reilley and Brandon O'Reilley Barnes; and two great grandchildren: Tyler Jardine and a soon to arrive great grandson (June).
Open casket viewing will be held Thursday March 11, 2010 at 09:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Marlatt Funeral Chapel, Kent WA. Interment will follow at Hill Crest Burial Park in Kent, WA.
