Helene R. Wood passed away on January 30, 2010 at the age of 98. At the time, she was with people who loved and cared about her very much.

Helene was born on August 9, 1911 in Seattle and spent most of her life there before moving to Kent and then Maple Valley. She began working at age 13, joining her mother at the Pike Place Market location of Manning's Coffee (a West Coast café and coffee company). At the young age of 16, she became the manager of the Manning's store on Broadway and continued to work at Manning's until starting a family. They regularly took their children camping and enjoyed visiting the Cascade Mountains. Later in life, she became a member of the Children's Orthopedic Hospital Guild and volunteered at the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shops. As a loving mother and grandmother, she was dedicated to helping and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed making new friends, usually over coffee and pastries.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Clyde A. Wood; mother Hazel Dahlby Johnson; and brothers Hubert and Harry Dahlby. She is survived by children Coral Lee Johnson (Gordon), Rae Ella Pearce (Jim), and Walter Wood; grandchildren Kevin Johnson (Keri), Brian Johnson (Carolyn), Bruce Johnson, Jeff Wood (Diane), Laura Honeysett, Kristin Lardent (Adam) and Michael Pearce; and five great-grandchildren.

Her long life was filled with experiences that she loved to share. She enjoyed travelling and loved going to Hawaii more than anywhere else. Whether travelling or at home in Washington, she enjoyed her passions- flowers, birds, food and people. Her stories will be missed, but not forgotten.

A funeral service will be held Wed February 3, 2010 at 11:00 am (Marlatt Funeral Home, 713 Central Ave. N. in Kent). A celebration of her life will follow.
